WITH what was supposed to be his first season in charge ruined by COVID-19, club great Jason Tom will get the chance to coach Leopold in 2021.

His appointment and that of assistant Sam Hughes and Head of Coaching Paul Lynch were ratified on Sunday.

Tom told krockfootball.com.au on June 16 he was keen to lead the Lions next year.

He said AFL Barwon’s plans for a modified season would be an ideal launchpad into 2021.

“It’s probably the beginning of our pre-season,” he said.

“And that’s probably the other aspect of it; if we don’t get this competitive fix, it’s another long pre-season until they can play competitively again.

“A 6-7 week competition, similar to a social basketball or soccer competition a lot of guys play in over summer, I think it’s got so many benefits as opposed to not playing.”

Tom is the latest GFL coach to be re-signed for next year, with Lara locking away Shayne Stone and St Mary’s confirming Glenn Keast and Travis Robertson will take the chance to lead the Saints’ delayed premiership defence.
