Leopold captain Marcus Thompson’s impressive football resume has added another accolade after being named in the GFNL Team of the Year for a sixth time.
First selected in the Lions’ maiden GFNL premiership year of 2016, Thompson also earned Team of the Year honours in 2017, 2019, 2022 and 2023.
Thompson was also selected as skipper of this year’s team.
League-leading goalkicker Adam Garner’s streak of being selected every year since 2019 also continued, with Ron Watt recognised for leading St Joseph’s to just the third unbeaten home-and-away season in GFNL history by being named coach.
St Mary’s duo Harry Benson and Jarryd Garner earned their third selections.
Thompson, the two Garners, Leopold bull Logan Wagener, Colac ruck Zach Zdybel, reigning joint Mathieson medalist Fraser Fort, Geelong West gun Tanner Lovell, St Joseph’s spearhead Paddy De Grandi and Lara veteran Dan Weigl return from last year’s team.
There are nine first-time selections: St Joseph’s quartet Luke Webb, Liam Betson, Oli Northam and James Hickey, St Mary’s pair Sam Bourke, Brayden Ham, North Shore ball magnet Nathan Arbon, Bell Park young gun Jack Sarcevic, and Leopold star Brock Williamson.
