REIGNING Premiers St Mary’s takes on GFNL ladder leaders Newtown & Chillwell for a massive Round 7 clash this Saturday, in what could be a close-fought game at Elderslie Reserve.
The Towner’s enter the game undefeated from the first six matches, while the second-placed Saints are coming five-straight wins.
St Mary’s coach Travis Robertson said not much could be taken from last year’s Qualifying Final match, where the Saints defeated the Eagles by 30-points.
“It was a very wind-influenced game last time we played them, but I don’t think anything, to be honest, could be taken from that game,” he said.
“As a footy club we’re looking forward to playing Newtown.
“They’ve obviously been the best side in the competition this year, based on form and results, and that’s what you play the game for.
“I think a lot’s changed.
“Our team will look very, very different from that team that played Newtown last time.”
Robertson said his side has prepared a gameplan they think best suits playing Newtown, but that won’t be affected by the rain forecast for this weekend.
“If it does rain it changes the game of footy a little, but they’re a really good contested inside mid-field group, which for them could be beneficial, but I don’t think it really changes anything.”
While there are likely to be a few changes to the Saints’ side, final selection will be announced on Thursday night.
“Our week-to-week selection has been at least three to five changes probably every game, so this week will be no different”, Robertson explained.
