Falcons fall short in a thriller

GEELONG Falcons have fallen just short of extending their three-game NAB League Boys winning streak.

The Falcons suffered a three-point loss to the Calder Cannons in their match-up at Highgate Reserve, despite having two more scoring shots.

It was a different looking Falcons team to the one that defeated Gippsland Power on June 20, with 11 changes.

Among the inclusions were debutants Patrick Visentin, Felix Henderson, Cooper Hayes and Chris Seymour.

“We had a few changes with different things coming on with (under) 17s Vic Country happening this week,” coach Paul Corrigan told Bay 93.9’s The Sideline View.

“And we had seven or eight players getting the opportunity to play VFL this weekend, too.”

“There’s always something going on and (we’re) juggling the players.

“But it also provided opportunities for a lot of players today to play.”

Emerging power forward Tom Gillett returned from GFL club Grovedale to kick three goals in his best performance since earning Falcons call up.

Fellow Tigers Cooper Whyte and Mitch Knevitt also impressed again, while acting captain Noah Gribble battled hard.

The Falcons, who now have a 3-5 win-loss record, face the Northern Knights next weekend in a match originally scheduled for last month.
