Geelong forward Gryan Miers is unsure how significant the club’s interest in Gold Coast gun Matt Rowell is, but he has backed the club’s efforts to strengthen its list.
It was reported earlier this week that Cats coach Chris Scott and football boss Andrew Mackie had next with Rowell, who is out of contract at the end of this year, in Melbourne following the 2024 season.
In the past decade, Geelong has successfully lured top-end talent from rivals, with captain Patrick Dangerfield, forward Jeremey Cameron, and, most recently, Bailey Smith moving to GMHBA Stadium.
During last year’s trade period, the Cats also made overtures to Melbourne midfielder Clayton Oliver.
“Our recruiting team are doing a great job, and that’s what everyone gets cut up about; is that we’re targeting great players, and we’ve targeted them in the past and ended up getting them,” Miers said this (Wednesday) morning.
“They’ll keep doing that job, and that is their job to do, is just target the best.
“I don’t know if we’re going for him, but if we are, then good luck to him, good luck to us, that if it happens, it’ll be exciting, and I hope we keep going after those big names.”
Miers, a massive fan of NFL team Philadelphia, has likened Geelong to the Superbowl-bound Eagles.
“Philadelphia did the same thing; they target the big names, and now they’re going to the Super Bowl,” he said.
“You don’t want to sit on your heels and let others take the best players in the league.
“If we fail at getting these players, so be it. But we’ve got Jeremy Cameron and won a premiership with him, and we’ve had great success (with) the other players – we got Danger ten years ago.
“You’ve got to keep doing it, and the only way to get better is by getting better players,
“And that makes the players like me at the team see those guys come in and go, “I don’t want them to steal my spot”.
“So I’m trying to get a little bit better as well, so all in all, it works with each other.”
