Geelong list boss Andrew Mackie says the Cats are “respectful” of Melbourne’s stance on Clayton Oliver being a required player at the Demons.
Mackie and CEO Steve Hocking have been widely reported as being part of a Geelong contingent that met with the gun midfielder at Rhys Stanley’s property last week.
However, Mackie told Trade Radio, “We’ve just put it to bed” when questioned about the Cats chase of the 27-year-old.
“Clayton’s management were aware that it might be in his best interests to maybe have a conversation,” Mackie said.”
“But it was pretty brief, to be honest.
“We met with him last Tuesday, and it’s always time well spent.
But as far we’re concerned, Melbourne have come out and had their stance on it, and we’re respectful of that; he’s got six years to go on a contract.
“From our end, it was fleeting.”
Meanwhile, discussions around getting Western Bulldogs midfielder Bailey Smith to GMHBA Stadium are set to drag well into the trade period, which concludes on October 17.
“Clearly, it’s exciting that Bailey would like to get to us; we’ve had a couple of conversations with Sam Power at the Dogs,” Mackie said.
“They were positive chats, so we’ll see where it gets to over the next ten days or so.
“It’s day one of (the) trade period, and there’s plenty to play out.
“Bailey’s been spending a little bit of time over the last couple of years down in Geelong and likes the idea of spending more time down there.
“On-field, clearly, he has some assets.”
