Geelong hasn’t shut the door on electric forward Chloe Scheer featuring in the final stages of the AFLW season, even if its finals hopes are done.

The Cats’ all-time leading goalkicker is yet to be sighted this season following toe surgery on the eve of the season.

Coach Dan Lowther says the former Adelaide star is out of a moonboot and has returned to running.

“The surgeon said she’s well ahead of expectation, in regards to her comeback to be ready to play,” Lowther said.

“She’s in really good spirits, which put me in good spirits. There’s hope she can get out on the field.

“She’s been doing a lot behind the scenes in regards to her conditioning and touch; she’s been unable to do much more.

“But, she feels great; her foot feels really good. Now, it’s just a matter of if there’s enough time to get her into position to play.”

Lowther is keen for Scheer to play, even if Geelong’s finals hopes were dashed heading into the final round clash against her former club.

“I’d love to play her if there was a chance to play and she was healthy,” he said.

“I think for her to be able to play at least some football this year would be of real benefit.

“If there’s nothing left to play for, in regards to a finals campaign, I think there’s a lot to gain from playing players to, again… another chance to play footy.

“So, if she’s healthy, we’ll play her.”

Geelong will likely welcome back Kate Surman (concussion) and Gabbi Featherston (Achilles) for Saturday’s must-win meeting with Richmond at Punt Road.

However, gun midfielder Amy McDonald’s best hope of a return from a hamstring injury suffered against Hawthorn on September 26 is the Week 9 meeting with the Brisbane Lions at GMHBA Stadium.

“She’s fine; she’s probably less than a fortnight away from playing, so that’s really positive for us as well,” Lowther said.

“She actually trained yesterday, so she’s up and moving, which is good.”
