Less than 24 hours after Aishling Moloney was named in her first All-Australian team, Geelong has confirmed the re-signing of the Irish star to a three-year contract extension.
The 25-year-old Tipperary native was recognised by selectors for an outstanding 2024 season, sharing the AFLW goal-kicking title with Brisbane Lion Taylor Smith.
Her 21 goals were the most in a season in competition history and included a Geelong-best six majors in the win over West Coast in the penultimate week.
Moloney finished runner-up in the Cats’ best-and-fairest and was also the club’s leading vote-getter in last (Monday) night’s AFLW best-and-fairest, polling nine votes from four games.
“We’re absolutely thrilled to secure Aishling for the next three years,” assistant football boss Brett Johnson said.
“She’s been a game-changer since joining the Cats and has quickly established herself as a key part of our forward structure.
“To achieve what Aishling has in such a short time is remarkable; from playing her first AFLW
game just over a year ago to being named an All-Australian and the joint-leading goal scorer in
the league, her development has been outstanding.
“We are incredibly excited to see Aishling continue to grow and reach new heights with us; she is
a key piece of our future, and we’re eager to watch her future unfold in the Hoops.”
The re-signing of Moloney leaves ten players to have their future confirmed ahead of next month’s trade period and draft.
Captain Meg McDonald, Kate Darby, Darcy Moloney, Shelley Scott, Kate Surman, Rachel Kearns, Caitlin Thorne, Claudia Gunjaca, Gabbi Featherston and Mel Bragg were all out of contract at the end of the season.
Moloney has been linked with a move interstate, with reports Sydney are keen on the midfielder’s services.
