“Search for perfection”

August 10, 2022 11:00 am in by

THE “endless search for perfection” will be Geelong’s focus over the last fortnight of the AFL home-and-away season.

The Cats are in the box seat to claim the minor premiership, with match-ups against Gold Coast and West Coast ahead of a 17th finals appearance in 19 seasons.

Coach Chris Scott believes Geelong can get better as it chases its first flag since 20111.

“We think there are multiple areas across our game that we can improve,” he said.

“We’re trying to take a focus into the last two games that we want to work on our game, whilst being respectful of what the opposition can bring, which is our focus every week.

“We never go in saying, ‘well, we don’t care what the opposition; we’re just going to play our game’.

“We’re always conscious of the tweaks you need to make, depending on the strengths of the opposition.

“It can be true, I think, that it becomes an individual focus; how can those individuals get their game in really good shape?

“We’re looking forward to really hone our game collectively and individually over the last two rounds.”

CATS: ZAC STILL FINDING HIS FEET

Geelong could make up to four changes for the trip to the Gold Coast.

Captain Joel Selwood and the versatile Mark Blicavs will play after being managed, and livewire forward Gary Rohan’s on track to return from a concussion suffered against the Western Bulldogs.

Patrick Dangerfield is also expected to play after being a late withdrawal from the win over St Kilda with calf tightness.

With Scott flagging that veteran winger Isaac Smith will be rested, up to three players from last week’s victory will find themselves on the outer.

However, the coach has reiterated what the team looks like against the Suns won’t be a reflection of it’s makeup in September.

“You shouldn’t look at our ins and outs any week and glean too much into what that means for what our preferred 22 is,” Scott said.

“We have a policy – I accept it’s different to a lot of teams – in that we don’t roll out what we think is our absolute best 22 every week.

“We’ve got a broad squad and different priorities.

“There will come a time when we’ve got to make some decisions. But, generally, those spots are horses for courses selection.

“It’s not a matter of saying, ‘we think this guy’s in our (best) 22, and this guy isn’t’.

“It depends on a whole range of factors that, again, shouldn’t be put together that this running back is more important to our team than this inside mid.”
