After just over 12 years at Geelong, Shane O’Bree will depart the club to become Collingwood’s recruiting boss.

It’s a homecoming for O’Bree, who played 227 of his 246 AFL games with the Magpies after 19 matches with the Brisbane Lions, where he was a teammate of Collingwood coach Craig McRae and Head of Football Strategy, Innovation and List Management Justin Leppitsch.

O’Bree joined the Cats from the Gold Coast as an assistant coach in 2012, before leading the club’s VFL team from 2016-2022.

The past two years have been spent working with the Geelong’s recruiting department.

“Shane has been integral in helping the club, working across numerous positions in our football department, first as a coach and more recently as a recruiter,” football boss Andrew Mackie said.

“It is an exciting opportunity for Shane, and we wish him and his family all the best for the future.”

O’Bree was appointed coach of local school St Joseph’s College’s 1st XVIII before Christmas.
