Deeper entries key for Cats

COACH Dan Lowther believes better decision-making will help Geelong in kicking higher scores.

The Cats were held to just one goal from 23 inside 50s in the last week’s four-point loss to Collingwood at GMHBA Stadium, with the Magpies able to repel their forward entries on numerous occasions easily.

“If you look at our heat maps the last couple of weeks, there have been some really shallow entries,” Lowther said.

“It just comes down to decision-making with the ball in hand.

“Because the games are pretty hotly contested, we don’t have much time with the footy.

“And when we do have time with the footy, we need to make sure we’re really efficient with the ball and make good decisions.

“If we can find an extra mark or two to work the ball forward, so we get that deeper entry, that’s the key.”

Geelong will travel to Tasmania for the first time since joining the AFLW competition tomorrow (Thursday) for a meeting with North Melbourne in Launceston on Friday night.

The 2-1 Cats sit a game clear of the 1-2 Roos, who will be among several teams fighting for a spot in the bottom half of the eight.

Geelong is winless from three meetings with North Melbourne.

“I’d be lying to say that we don’t want to try and win as many early games as possible,” Lowther said.

“But, I don’t think our squad, with the direction we’re taking, and the playing group we’ve got, and the improvement we’ve got in us, if we were not to be successful this weekend, I don’t think that would hamper any of our games going forward or attitude going forward.

“I think we’re a really strong chance to win, but they will be as well.

“They’ve had Melbourne, (and) Adelaide. We’ve had strong games against Collingwood and Fremantle away.

“So. it’s just about building that belief that we’re good enough to play against the really good sides, traditionally, over the last two or three seasons.”

Geelong will name its team late tomorrow afternoon after training in Launceston, where it will take a 23-player squad.
