Geelong and Tom Hawkins have come to terms on a one-year contract that will extend the club great’s career into an 18th season.
The new deal will see, barring injury, Hawkins go past Joel Selwood’s club record of 355 games.
The 35-year-old (he turns 36 in July) will enter the 2024 season on 347 games.
Hawkins also needs just 19 goals to become the 13th player in VFL/AFL history and the third at Geelong to kick 800 goals.
The three-time premiership player says “truly humbled” to play on at the club his father Jack and grandfather Fred Le Deux also represented.
“The choices we make in professional sports aren’t isolated; they ripple out and involve lots of other people in your life,” Hawkins said in a club statement.
“That’s why after each season, after each contract, I always take time to sit and reflect with my loved ones to discuss our future and not only what’s the best for me but also for everyone who’s on this journey with me.
“I was always motivated to continue playing with the Cats. Geelong isn’t just where I work, it’s home. It’s the community that’s given me so much, and I feel privileged to have another chance to give back in 2024.
“The future looks bright from here in Geelong. I look forward to the young guys keeping me young and continuing to give my all to this Club.
“My motivation without question is still there. I will continue as I was always taught, to try and leave this club in a better place than when I started.
“I’m really excited for the challenge that’s in front of the team and myself moving forward into the future.”
Reports during the week had talks between Geelong and Hawkins at an impasse, with one suggesting Melbourne were interested in the five-time All-Australian.
“Tom is such a big part of the Geelong Football Club, we are excited to have Tom playing on in 2024,” football boss Andrew Mackie said.
“His leadership, knowledge, professionalism and on-field contribution, where he continues to be one of the best at his craft, will help drive our club forward.
“Tom is integral to our football program and continues to positively influence our playing group, especially our young forwards and key position players, and we can’t wait to see Tom in the Hoops for an 18th season.”
