Geelong will open its 2025 campaign with a trip to Brisbane to play the reigning premiers as part of the AFL’s second Opening Round.
The Cats will face the Lions, who overcame a 25-point deficit in the preliminary final meeting between the two clubs, in the first game of the new season at the Gabba on Thursday, March 6, according to multiple reports.
Geelong CEO Steve Hocking told krockfootball.live on October 1 that the club was open to being part of the opening weekend.
“I think what will naturally happen is, because of the teams that had their time in that this year, then there’ll be other teams that will roll through,” he said.
“Whether we’re part of that… we’ve got a strong following in those northern states – it’s really, really strong.
“We’d be one of the most supported clubs up through that area.
“So that may be the case. We’ll leave that to the AFL.”
Geelong is expected to have a bye between playing the Lions and travelling to Adelaide to play the Crows to open Gather Round in Round 5.
That will be followed by the now-traditional Easter Monday meeting with Hawthorn at the MCG on Easter Monday, which falls on April 21 next year.
The entire fixture, which will include ten home games for the Cats at GMHBA Stadium for the first time since 1996, is due to be released this Thursday.
