TRUE tears of joy flowed for Tom Hawkins at the realisation he was to become a three-time premiership player.
The Geelong forward, who kicked three goals in the 81-point grand final hiding of Sydney at the MCG, was overcome with emotion after the final siren.
“I don’t know exactly what it was,” Hawkins told K rock Football. “But, I touched on the hard work that’s been in front of me and the group.
“Written off time and time again, we talk about (it) internally.
“We thank the club for getting us in a position to be able to compete every year.
“Man, they’re just so hard to win.”
Hawkins set the tone for the day by kicking the first two goals in a similar fashion.
In separate ruck contests against Tom Hickey, he shifted the Swan off the line of the ball, grabbed the Sherrin, and snapped a goal.
“It was nice to get off to a good start,” Hawkins said.
“Sydney are so dangerous when they’re able to move the ball on their terms, so we had elite pressure.
“They certainly don’t always work, but those two managed to find their way through, to be honest … they weren’t pretty, but they went through.
“It was magic that first quarter, and then we just kept on pushing forward from there.”
