Geelong will play an AFL home-and-away match in Darwin for the first time in 2024.

The Cats will open Sir Doug Nicholls Round as the away team to Gold Coast on Thursday, 16 May, at TIO Stadium.

“We welcome the opportunity to play for premiership points in Darwin for the first time in the club’s history and are excited to be part of the match-up against the Gold Coast Suns that opens the AFL’s Sir Doug Nicholls Round,” Geelong CEO Steve Hocking said in a statement.

The Cats’ last trip to the Northern Territory was for a pre-season game against Melbourne in 2014, with their most recent appearance in Darwin coming in 2007 when it defeated Port Adelaide in a second-round NAB Cup game.

On Sunday, Geelong was confirmed as playing Western Bulldogs in Adelaide as part of Gather Round.

The entire AFL fixture is due to be released later this week.
